Micronesia is one of the Pacific’s most remote destinations, made up of scattered islands and atolls across a huge area of ocean. The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) has four states: Pohnpei, Chuuk, Yap and Kosrae. Each offers something different, so choosing where to go depends largely on your interests.
Pohnpei: Rainforest and Ancient Ruins
Pohnpei is lush, mountainous and full of waterfalls, jungle and coastal scenery.
The island's biggest attraction is Nan Madol, an ancient complex built from huge basalt stones on small artificial islands. It's one of the most fascinating historical sites in the Pacific.
You can also hike to waterfalls, explore the rainforest and visit Sokehs Rock for views across the island.

Chuuk: World-Famous Wreck Diving
Chuuk is best known for Chuuk Lagoon, home to numerous Japanese ships and aircraft sunk during World War II.
The wrecks are now covered in coral and surrounded by marine life, making the lagoon a major destination for experienced divers.
If you're not a diver, there are islands and lagoons to explore, but diving is undoubtedly the main attraction.

Yap: Mantas and Island Culture
Yap offers a mix of traditional culture and marine adventures.
The island is famous for its enormous stone money, known as rai, which can still be seen around traditional villages.
Yap is also renowned for manta rays, with local dive operators offering trips to sites where encounters are possible.
Take time to explore the island's villages and cultural traditions, while always asking permission before photographing people or ceremonies.

Kosrae: A Quiet Tropical Escape
Kosrae is the quietest-feeling of the four states, with dense rainforest, mangroves and coral reefs.
Hiking is a major attraction, while kayaking through the mangroves offers a peaceful way to explore the island. Diving and snorkelling are also popular.
Kosrae is ideal if you want nature, tranquillity and fewer tourists.

Getting Around Micronesia
Travel between the four states is mainly by air, and flight schedules can be limited. Check connections carefully before booking hotels and activities, and leave some flexibility in your itinerary.
Rental cars are useful on Pohnpei and Kosrae, while taxis, transfers and organised tours are common options elsewhere.
When to Visit
Micronesia is tropical year-round, but rainfall and sea conditions vary between islands.
If you're visiting primarily for diving, check seasonal conditions with local dive operators before booking.
Whatever time of year you visit, bring lightweight clothing, rain protection and comfortable shoes.
