Istanbul – and Why You Should Visit Izmir Instead

When it comes to travel in Turkey, Istanbul gets most of the attention – and we get why! It’s a city where continents meet, where ancient history rubs shoulders with modern life, and where every neighborhood feels like its own world. But it’s also crowded, hectic, and can be overwhelming if you’re looking for a more relaxed pace... That’s where Izmir comes in. Sitting on Turkey’s Aegean coast, Izmir has the history, the food, and the waterfront atmosphere without the daily chaos of Istanbul. It’s the country’s third-largest city, but it feels more like a big seaside town than a sprawling metropolis. The pace is slower, the air feels fresher, and the sea is never far away.

A different kind of energy

In Istanbul, crossing the street can feel like a tactical mission, and sightseeing often means weaving through tour groups. Izmir, on the other hand, invites you to stroll along the Kordon promenade at sunset, sip Turkish coffee in quiet courtyards, and take your time browsing the Kemeralti Market.

People still hustle here – it’s a working city, after all – but there’s more room to breathe.

Historical appeal

Izmir has its share of ancient ruins, from the Agora of Smyrna right in the city center to the incredible ancient city of Ephesus just an hour away. And unlike Istanbul’s famous landmarks, you’re far less likely to spend half your morning in line. You can also easily reach seaside towns like Çeşme and Alaçatı for day trips, mixing history with beach time.

Food and coastal life

Seafood is a staple here, and the city’s location means daily markets are full of fresh catch. You’ll also find meze spreads that rival any in Istanbul, but with the bonus of a sea view and more reasonable prices. The nightlife is lively but not overwhelming – it's more about bars with live music rather than shoulder-to-shoulder nightclubs.

Getting there

Izmir has an international airport with flights from across Europe, as well as frequent domestic flights from Istanbul, Ankara, and Antalya. The train and bus connections make it an easy addition to a longer trip through Turkey.

So Istanbul might be Turkey’s star, but Izmir is the place you’ll actually want to linger. It has the same cultural depth, great food, and historical richness, without the sensory overload. If you want to see a side of Turkey that’s as charming as it is livable, head for the Aegean and let Izmir surprise you.
